“Somos Tierra”: Students Promote Environmental Conservation in Colón, Querétaro

Meaningful environmental change begins with action. Through conservation and sustainability initiatives, our students put their knowledge into practice, helping protect biodiversity and inspire greater environmental awareness within their community.

On October 22, 2026, Texas State University Querétaro participated in “Somos Tierra” (We Are Earth), the first Environmental Education Fair in the municipality of Colon, where members of the GROW Club and the Axolotarium shared their initiatives with children and young people, bringing them closer to the importance of caring for our environment and the impact they can generate from today.

Somos Tierra Environmental Education Fair: a place to learn how to care for the environment

With the participation of more than 25 institutions and organizations, the fair brought together students, authorities, specialists and representatives of civil society in a day dedicated to the conservation of natural resources, biodiversity and environmental education.

Led by the mayor of Colon, Gaspar Trueba Moncada, the event offered educational activities, exhibitions and conferences to bring environmental knowledge closer to people of different ages.

For our students, this experience represented an opportunity to share their knowledge, inspire new generations, and demonstrate how university initiatives can contribute to the care of their community.

GROW Club: small actions, lasting environmental impact

Sustainability is also built through everyday decisions. With this vision in mind, our GROW Club promotes projects related to composting, gardening, pollinator protection, and natural resource conservation.

During the fair, its members shared some of the initiatives they developed as part of their student participation, bringing visitors closer to practices that promote a more responsible relationship with the environment.

Through these types of experiences, students have the opportunity to transform their interest in the environment into collaborative projects, develop new skills, and actively participate in the ecological challenges of their community.

The Axolotarium: a conservation project like no other

What began with just two axolotls has become one of the biggest student conservation projects in the state of Queretaro.

The Axolotarium is a research, conservation, and responsible breeding center for the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), an endangered species whose presence is an important indicator of the health of ecosystems.

Their initial research and breeding practices resulted in the birth of three axolotls. Today, the project is home to more than 150 axolotls and brings together more than 60 students from fields such as Biotechnology, Economics, Engineering, and Marketing.

This multidisciplinary collaboration allows each student to contribute knowledge and skills from their field of study to a shared purpose: contributing to the conservation of an emblematic Mexican species. Their participation in the Somos Tierra fair helped bring this work closer to new generations and highlight the importance of protecting not only the axolotl, but also the ecosystems on which its survival depends.

Our environment, our community, our responsibility

somos tierra action

The natural wealth of Colón, from its hills to its water catchment areas, reminds us that the development of a community also depends on its ability to protect the environment.

At Texas State University Querétaro, we recognize our responsibility to our community in Colón and to the entire state of Querétaro. Therefore, we embrace environmental commitment as a fundamental part of our educational project, fostering spaces where students can research, collaborate, and participate in sustainability and conservation initiatives.

Our participation in Somos Tierra reflects a conviction that goes beyond the classroom: the future of our community also depends on how we take care of the place we call home.
